Letterloaf
Daily Word Game
About Letterloaf
Letterloaf is a daily word game that bakes one word into the next. You start with a short word, say ROSE. The next layer hands you one new letter, a T, and you fold it in: STORE. Then another letter, and another, until the loaf has risen to eight letters.
Any real word counts, so you are never guessing what the puzzle maker had in mind. Typos cost nothing; only a real word that leaves letters out burns the crust. Stuck? A peek places the first letter of a common answer, and shows up as butter in your result.
When the loaf is baked you see the everyday answers, your time, your rank on today’s board and your streak. Then share it: a little loaf of emoji squares that shows how your morning went without a single spoiler, with a link so friends can bake the same loaf.
Everyone gets the same loaf each day, and a new one rises at midnight UTC. Missed one? Yesterday’s loaf is a tap away, and Practice bakes as many as you like.
How to play
- The loaf starts with a four-letter word you are given.
- Each new layer adds one letter. Make a real word that uses every letter of the layer above plus the new one, in any order.
- Tap the dough balls or type, then press Bake. Any real word counts, and a word that isn't in the list costs nothing.
- Four layers later you have an eight-letter word and a baked loaf to share.
Controls
| Input | What it does |
|---|---|
| Touch | Tap the dough balls in order to spell a word; tap the last one again to take it back |
| Touch | Bake, Backspace, Shuffle and Peek are buttons under the letters |
| Mouse | Click the dough balls and the buttons |
| Keyboard | Type the letters; Enter bakes, Backspace takes a letter back |
| Keyboard | Space shuffles, Up arrow peeks, Esc or P pauses, M mutes |
Tips
- Look at what the new letter can do first. Plenty of layers are an old word plus an ending like -S, -ED, -ER or -ING.
- Shuffle when you are stuck. A new order breaks the pattern your eyes got used to.
- Bake only when every letter is in the word. The Bake button lights up when it is.
- A peek gives the first letter of a common answer and often unlocks the whole layer.
FAQ
Which words count?
Any real word that uses every letter of the layer. Guesses are checked against ENABLE, a public-domain word list made for word games (with thanks to its authors), minus offensive words. The answers shown afterwards are everyday words.
What burns the crust?
A real word that leaves letters out. Each word can burn only once per layer, and your very first one is a free warning. Words that are not in the list cost nothing, so typos are safe.
How do peeks and ads work?
Each loaf comes with one free peek. After that you can watch a short ad for another when one is available, or wait: the next peek unlocks free after two minutes on the same layer. Every peek shows as butter in your result either way.
How do streaks and freezes work?
Bake each daily loaf to grow your streak. Every seven days in a row earns a freeze (you can hold one) that covers a single missed day. Stats live in your browser; no account needed.
Is it the same loaf for everyone?
Yes. A new loaf rises at midnight UTC and your first try counts for the daily board. You can close the tab and carry on later; a loaf finished after midnight still counts for your streak, but not for the board.
Can I share my result without spoilers?
Yes. Share builds a loaf of brown squares, one per letter, with a flame for each burn and butter for each peek, plus your time and a short link. It never contains a letter of the answers.
Design notes
We wanted a daily word game whose rule you learn from one example: add a letter, find the word. Every loaf is checked so each layer has a word a casual player knows, and the shared result is shaped like the loaf, so it stands out in a group chat without spoiling anything.
Changelog
